Are credit repair companies legit and do they really help?

Can you answer Michelle B’s question about Credit Repair?:

I am trying to raise my credit score quickly. Right now I am at 593-around 650 depending on agency. So, by paying off the 5 credit cards that I currently have(some with amounts ranging from 1,500-2,500), should that raise my credit score a great deal? If not, will a credit repair company help or are they just a scam?

Credit Repair Feedback: Basically, with a credit repair company, they do what you can do, only they charge you for it. They call your credit companies and work out a payment plan, or get your interest lowered, or some other such thing. Also, this still wouldn’t raise your score quickly.

Making your payments consistently will raise your score, but it will take time. There are so many factors to take into consideration with your credit score. Paying your cards is just one piece of the puzzle.
