Can you pay someone to fix credit report?

Can you answer Action!’s question about Credit Repair?:

Is this an urban myth? I keep hearing stories of people paying some guy 500-1000 to fix their credit score. I have a friend who works at a Jag dealership. He claims that a guy came in trying to get financed for a car on Monday and it didn’t go through, but the same came back on Saturday and it went through. He asked his customer what happened? He guy claimed he has a friend in Atlanta who delete certain items off your credit and boost your score? One of my husbands friend got his car repoed and has been foreclosed on and this year he got a new car and a house? He claim he got his fixed? I suspect this is illegal, but is it true?

Credit Repair Feedback: The only way to legally “fix your score” is to hire a credit repair service and they will dispute all of the reports on your credit for you.

Credit Repair Feedback: Yes I am sure there are people who can delete info. However, I agree with you about this being illegal. I am not sure but I am guessing it could also be a federal crime. I believe it would be a federal crime because it would be fraud and most lenders are federally insured…..just my guess.

Credit Repair Feedback: There are people who can access credit reports and change information however this is illegal. It’s fraud and the people doing this can go to jail. As well as the people paying them to do this. It doesn’t take long for the credit bureau to figure out what happened. Once they do anything that you acquired can be repoed. As this is fraud and you gained access to these items under false pretenses. I wouldn’t do this because you can and will go to jail.

Credit Repair Feedback: I’ve never heard of that, however I have heard that you can pay someone to get a new social security number.

Credit Repair Feedback: You can, but why pay someone when you can do it yourself? Also, I think those stories are exaggerated as it takes time and effort to clean a credit report. If you want to learn how to do it, the forums at creditboards.com are a great resource.
