If I have bad credit, do I have to wait 7 to 10 years before I can get a loan?

Answered By Sophia Caylar, Editor

Regularly, you can get a high grade credit report even after two or three years after filing for bankruptcy. This is because creditors are not generally interested in the shape of your finances years ago. What is important to them is your present financial state.

With a great financial recovery plan and a little discipline, you can build up a great credit report once again. Positive reports last forever, while your negative report will only be there for a short time.

There are such things as bad credit loans. Be very careful of falling into this trap. Do your homework very thoroughly. While you may be able to get some money to get you through the short term with a bad credit loan, they are generally designed with a high interest rates and other difficult terms for the long term. Most people find that loans such as these never allow them to get out from under them causing them to get even deeper into debt with worse credit.

Making a financial recovery plan and sticking to it can raise your credit score to an acceptable level for getting a loan within just a few years. Of course, each case is individual, but this is generally the case for most people.
