Should I use a credit repair agency to fix my credit?

Answered By Sophia Caylar, Editor

While this may seem like the easy way out, letting credit repair companies fix your credit may shed out more problems later on. There have been a lot of credit repair companies known to use illegal methods such as creating a new credit company that pile up legal dilemmas.

With that said, the right credit repair agency may be just what you need. When you are in debt and your phone is ringing off the hook with debt collectors, it is difficult to get on top of things. Good credit repair agencies will keep on top of things for you. They know the in's and out's of the industry, and they know how to talk to the collectors. They can help you come up with a debt recovery plan and give you just enough breathing room to get on top of your credit.

But, beware. There are plenty of credit repair agencies that make claims but use shady practices and/or never follow through with their claims, leaving you with just one more bill to pay and deeper in debt. Doing your homework is essential. Word of mouth of best.

Plus, be prepared to do some of the work, yourself. A credit repair company is not a magic pill. Ultimately, you are still responsible for your debt. These companies can help, but they are not the end all.
